Contractor, born from Mumbai in India, was raised in Nigeria up until she turned seven. She had already experienced many different travels and other cultures since a young age. She attended boarding schools between the ages of 7 to 9 in London. Later the family returned in Toronto (Canada) which is where they lived for the rest of her childhood. Contractor was an outstanding student in Toronto and was trained to be a classical ballet dancer. In the Etobicoke School of the Arts (a public high school specializing in the arts), Contractor studied both ballet and theater. Contractor started acting at the age of 16 after completing a total of 10 years of dance. She received a full-scholarship grant to attend the University of Toronto after graduating. The university offered her master's degree in theater and also double-majored in social and psychology. After a single semester at the University, Contractor went to an open call audition for the play Pericles in the highly regarded famous, world-class Stratford Shakespeare Festival [Ontario, Canada and got the leading role. After two weeks of performances, she got glowing reviews. The production was recognized as the best production by Canadian reviewers. She was invited to attend Stratford's conservatory, a program which allows just four men and eight women can take a 20 weeks crash program in classical theatre. Her place in the upcoming play season was secured and she was chosen as Hermia.
